in-cosmetics North America returned to New York from October 23-24, with the region’s major beauty brands joining their indie counterparts in sourcing the latest personal care ingredients and learning about the trends that are set to shape the future of the sector.

Among the high-quality visitors from leading cosmetic brands attending this year’s event was Chaz Hudak, Manager of Origins Research and Development at The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. He commented: “What I like most about the show is being able to connect with my suppliers and learn about new technologies. In just a few hours I’d met a handful of new contacts, while the free educational program was extremely beneficial.”

Innovation galore on the exhibition floor
Over the two days that in-cosmetics North America came to town, dozens of new innovations were on show to inspire the next wave of cosmetic creations. From novel color cosmetics and sensory enhancers to the most advanced active and functional ingredients available, the event was the perfect place for beauty and personal care creators to find out about the latest ingredients and suppliers.

This year, visitors benefited from meeting local businesses Acme-Hardesty, Alzo International, Delfin, Grant Industries and Integrity Ingredients Corporation, who joined international organisations including Japan’s ICHIMARU PHARCOS CO, Brazil’s Chemyunion, China’s KingPowder Technology and South Korea’s AT Lab Co. Ltd.

Speaking about the ability to source new ingredients, Alex Bliziotis from Blue Sun International, commented: “I head up an applications lab and came to the event looking for inspiration and the hottest ingredients. The makeup of in-cosmetics North America means it is easy to find the best products and meet directly with the suppliers.”

Designed to help visitors to discover the latest launches and map out their time at show, the Innovation Zone brought together a variety of ingredients that had been launched in the last eight months including Mibelle Biochemistry’s Black BeeOme, which picked up a top prize at the event’s Award ceremony on October 23. Additionally, the Sensory Bar and Make-Up Bar areas presented attendees with an easy way to locate formulations that showcase trend-setting color cosmetics and textures.

Moving from behind closed doors, this year’s exclusive Speed Networking session took place on the show floor, giving suppliers a five-minute window to pitch their beauty innovations to some of the fastest growing indie brands as well as leading R&D teams from major cosmetic businesses. Diane Dabkowski, Manager at AVON Products, was one of those taking part: “in-cosmetics North America is the only event I’ve been to that has a speed networking event. It’s an energetic and dynamic session that presents both brands and suppliers with a tremendous opportunity.”

This year also saw the launch of a brand-new Indie Tour, complimenting the show’s popular Fast Track Marketing Technology Tour. The new, free-to-attend indie program – introduced following feedback from Indies who wanted to easily access relevant suppliers – was incredibly well received by all those that attended.

A platform to learn from the experts
Another major draw of the fourth edition of in-cosmetics North America was the Marketing Trends theater, which featured exclusive presentations from a host of international experts, including representatives from Mintel, Euromonitor International, GlobalData and Seymourpowell.

Kicking off this year’s seminar program, Kayla Villena, Senior Analyst at Euromonitor International, provided invaluable insights into how consumers are shopping for beauty products. She identified which channels are coming to the fore and explained how brands can capitalize on those that are growing the fastest.

Meanwhile, during the highly informative Technical Seminars, eight leading personal care suppliers provided cosmetic chemists with a unique opportunity to learn more about their novel ingredients. They were joined by Ithos Global and UL who helped attendees discover new ways to manage metrics during the commercialization process and how to navigate global cosmetics compliance requirements, respectively.

Another part of the free education program was the eagerly anticipated Formulation Lab which was curated by Mark Chandler from ACT Solutions Corp – the show’s new Official Technical Advisor. The interactive training sessions gave R&D professionals a chance to work with Univar Solutions’ team to develop a cold process primer to achieve a haute look. In another session, EMD Performance Materials helped chemists create a serum that infuses skin with powerhouse moisture, while also providing impactful, skin enhancing aesthetics.

Ruth Lee, Product Development Coordinator at Cosmax commented: “I’m constantly looking for new trends and have clients that are actively seeking innovative, sustainable packaging. I’ve been able to find a list of new vendors from visiting the show and think it’s perfectly set up to cater to cosmetic manufacturers’ needs.”

Step up for the awards
The 2019 show also saw the best in the industry recognized for their achievements. In addition to Mibelle Biochemistry’s Innovation Zone Award, SEPPIC’s Sunshine & Pixie Dust SPF30 – an easy-to-apply suncare emulsion – picked up the Sensory Bar award whilst Natura-tec’s DIY Super Glow frosted metallic eye shadow took home the coveted Make-Up Bar award.

But it was Swiss American – one of the US’s leading contract manufacturers – that stole the headlines by rising to the challenge and fighting off stiff competition from Johnson & Johnson and previous winners Colgate-Palmolive and Shiseido to win the Formulation Challenge – a competition to create a novel beauty product for a specific target audience in just 90 minutes.

Amid jubilant scenes at the in-cosmetics North America Awards Ceremony, the judges remarked that Swiss American’s Wise Beyond The Years serum for the face, neck and hands was perfect for its mature male target audience.

Moving to New Jersey in 2020
As the in-cosmetics brand continues to grow in North America, it was also revealed that for 2020, the event will move to New Jersey, the beauty industry’s heartland – closer to the major R&D centers. What will LipoTrue will be showcasing at in-cosmetics Global this year?

This year we will present four new active ingredients that totally match the beauty uniqueness trend and disruption. We are very proud of presenting Munapsys™ peptide which was awarded with the Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Bronze Award 2018 at in- cosmetics North America. It presents a real upgrade in the botulinum-like ingredients field because it works in a new protein in Cosmetics and in both the pre- and post-synaptic pathways.

We will also be presenting Stellight™ which was launched in the last In Cosmetics Asia 2018. This peptide acts on melanocytes, keratinocytes and fibroblast, regulating the three-way modulating melanin, the numbers of dendrites and melanocytes, while providing an antioxidant effect. The in vivo test showed that Stellight™ lightened and illuminated six points in the face just like drawing a brightening constellation. In fact, these points also fit with the ones that the strobing make-up tries to highlight.

Specially for this new In Cosmetics edition we will launch Skinarch™ and Meiview™. Skinarch™ is a peptide that works in the skin architecture by increasing collagens of the four families and what we call the collagen architecture protein, which is involved in the formation of well-organized collagen fibrils for a proper collagen biotensegrity. The in vivo test was performed in a mixed panel of volunteers with fair and dark skin, showing to be effective in both skin types.

Last but not least, Meiview™ is a marine extract form a microorganism living in high salted conditions. It reinforces epidermal integrity and firmness and improves the microcirculation fragility and it proved its efficacy both in men and women against eyebags, dark circles, wrinkles and saggy eyelids.

Tell me more about Munapsys™. What is so revolutionary about it?

For the first time in years, we can say that it has been areal innovation in the botulinum-like ingredients field. In the market there are ingredients acting in the pre-synaptic pathway or in the post-synaptic one. In fact, when customers want to cover both pathways, they have to use combinations of ingredients. We thought that if we were able to have an ingredient able to cover both, it would be a real upgrade. Thus, in collaboration with experts in neuroscience we developed Munapsys which also tackles a new protein key in the SNARE complex assembly. We wanted to prove in vivo if our theory was correct, so we tested a cream with 3% Munapsys™ against a cream with 5% of a combination of two benchmarks, covering both pathways. The results fulfilled all our expectations. In fact, even used at a lower concentration it showed similar or even better results in some parameters.

Moreover, we also wanted to introduce a new concept in Cosmetics. Since, the botulinum toxin is used to improve and lift the commissures of what we can call sad lips, we decided to see if Munapsys™ could be able to do as a proof of concept. We invite you to discover more in the Technical seminar that will take place on 2nd April at 12:10h, Theatre 2.

What trends can these products be used in?

Beauty is unique and we should be allowed to live our own beauty as we want. This has been Lipotrue’s motto this year: ‘my beauty, my rules’.

Stellight™ is bringing the freedom to enjoy the strobing makeup, quite popular these days, in a more permanent way that not only the ephemeral touch of makeup. This technique is time consuming so that why not help the skin to glow naturally.

Munapsys™ is tackling the choose your expression trend of not worrying about aging and also the wellness trend thanks to the happy smile concept. Because beauty is unique and should be free of worries.

Skinarch™ enters fully in the inclusive trend thanks to its in vivo test in fair and dark skin volunteers. We could say that it was designed for a full spectrum beauty.

Finally, Meiview™, would fall into the non-gender category. It can be used in both products aimed at women or men but also to non-gender products following this increasing trend.

in-cosmetics Latin America is celebrating a resounding success, with a record number of innovations launched at the show’s fifth edition in Brazil’s São Paulo’s Expo Center Norte, highlighting the importance of the show for industry professionals.

The premier event in the region’s beauty ingredients calendar attracted a total of 4,844 visitors.
The geographical spread of visitors also rose, with around 25% travelling from outside São Paulo. Areas including Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo, Ceará, Alagoas, Federal District and Amazonas, among other estates in Brazil, were represented, while 7% of visitors journeyed from countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Ecuador.

The event also welcomed 80% of the 15 largest international suppliers, which, between them, showcased more than 160 brands from 22 countries. Global suppliers, including Clariant, DSM, Ashland, Silab, Symrise, Givaudan, Chemyunion and Lonza all highlighted their latest breakthrough technologies. Among the most popular new ingredients on display was Campo Pearl Extract, an additive for moisturisers, whiteners, reparatives and UV protection. China-based Fencham Biotek also showcased its new range of natural products, such as Alkyl Polyglucoside – a nonionic-surfactant made from ingredients such as vegetable oil and starch – the perfect solutions to meet increasing consumer demand for natural, renewable products.

Beatriz Fabbrini de Godoy, marketing manager at Chemspecs, experienced business success at the show. She said: “Usually, projects are born at the show to be developed over the next 12 months, but we closed deals at in-cosmetics Latin America this year. We set up appointments to meet with customers and had a lot of positive conversations. We didn’t expect to see so many visitors from the north and north-east regions, so it was brilliant to have a diverse mix of professionals to the stand.

New! Spotlight On and Regulations & Testing Zone
The Spotlight On area, sponsored by Chemyunion with Beautystreams as a media partner, focused on some of the biggest industry trends: Haircare actives, anti-ageing and formulation,  chosen for their importance to the future of the Latin American beauty sector. Each featured both ingredients and finished formulation displays that were curated to help inspire the next wave of products to hit the market.
Sérgio Gonçalves, marketing director of Chemyunion, said that the area was in synergy with his company and both were “inspiring innovation”.

Elsewhere, the Regulations & Testing Zone offered a simplified look at what can be a complicated area for manufacturers. It included a selection of innovative exhibitors, includingPharmilab, Interlab and Allergisa, all of which showcased state-of-the-art testing facilities, as well as talking visitors through current and coming regulations.

in-cosmetics Latin America this year offered the most comprehensive education programme in
the event’s history, including the brand-new two-hour Regulations Conference, in partnership
with the Council of the Cosmetic, Personal Care and Home Care Industries (CASIC) of Latin
America.
Taking to the stage for the keynote speech was Luciana Santi, Vice President, CASIC. Her presentation looked at the importance of regulatory frameworks for the fast-growing Latin American cosmetics industry and technological and innovation advances. Next on stage was Roseli Mello, Director of Innovation at Natura, who discussed cosmetic innovation and sustainable use of socio-biodiversity from her company’s perspective. With the highest-ever attendance at the educational aspects of the show, visitor feedback was positive. Vicente Sanford, operations manager of WU Indústria e Comércio de Cosméticos, said innovation is the outstanding highlight of in-cosmetics Latin America. “We attend the show every year because we are always looking for ways to differentiate ourselves in the market and the show helps us by enabling us to meet suppliers and source raw materials with new benefits.

The wealth of educational tips and advice on offer was paramount for Marisa Lima, coordinator of Fareva, who believes that in-cosmetics Latin America is essential for scientific development in the industry. She said: “There were plenty of interesting formulations on the show and it was so useful to be able to connect with the suppliers and learn about their latest work as it is essential for our
day to day.

Exploring innovation and the scents of success
An annual favourite of R&D professionals, the event’s Innovation Zone showcased 28 of the most
exciting active and functional ingredient launches. Gattefossé used the platform to launch its Definicire™ product, a 100% natural active texturising agent, based on functionalised jojoba and sunflower seed waxes, that recreates the hair protective lipid layer. It significantly increases hair hydrophobicity, guaranteeing frizz and volume control, curl definition under high humidity
and enhanced hair smoothness.
Amanda Pimentel, Business manager, Gatefossé Brazil, said: “in-cosmetics Latin America is the
only show in which we participate in Brazil. We have been a loyal customer since the first edition
and this year was our best experience with many meetings with visitors from outside São Paulo
and from different Latin American countries. The show is so strategic for us that this is the first time
we are launching a global ingredient in Latin America at the show.
There were plenty of innovative new launches with Chemyunion bringing ThermoShield, a heat protecting active that entraps water inside hair fibres and forms a protective coat; and Symrise
Aromas e Fragrancias showcasing Hydrolite® 5 Green, a multifunctional ingredient manufactured from renewable raw materials from sugar that hydrates the skin and boosts the efficacy of active ingredients used in cosmetic formulations.

The anticipated Innovation Zone Awards highlighted three top ingredients with Givaudan
winning gold for its anti-ageing PrimalHyal Ultrafiller. The silver award went to IFF – Lucas Meyer
Cosmetics for its Greyverse™, while RAHN AG took bronze for its SEBOCLEAR™-MP.

The Spotlight On Awards crowned more winners with Chemyunion taking gold for its Make Up Eraser, which was developed in response to the on-the-go trend. ANGUS Chemical Company won silver with its DMAMP™ ULTRA PC while IFF – Lucas Meyer Cosmetics won bronze for Greyverse™ – its second win. Lastly, Lubrizol took away the coveted Innovation and Technology in Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrances (ITEHPEC) Innovation Award for its FENSEBIOME peptid, which was developed to reinforce vulnerable urban skin to help it face modern life.

This year’s Fragrance Trail offered a feast for the senses, introducing visitors to the premier fragrance houses, producers and distributors of raw materials and extracts, such as Sensient, Givaudan, Phytoessence, Symrise and Tovani. Expert formulation advice was on hand, alongside insight into regional differences in scent preferences, making it the ideal platform for R&D teams to source aromatic components for new skincare and beauty products.

Education on tap
The renowned Marketing Trends Theatre played host to numerous leading trends forecasters
who highlighted the latest consumer preferences from both international and regional perspectives.
Among the experts who presented were Mintel’s Global Haircare Analyst Andrew McDougall and Senior Analyst, Beauty & Personal Care, Juliana Martins. They offered an in-depth examination of trends impacting the industry now and those set to influence the future.
Andrew discussed how brands can take inspiration from the way the microbiome is being addressed in the skincare category and adapt this for hair and scalp formulations, while Juliana took a closer look at future beauty trends from across the globe that are set to influence Latin American beauty in the coming years. She cited stick make-up formats, in particular, in response to consumer demand for convenient products that can be used anytime, anywhere.
Understanding routes to market is also paramount for brands and manufacturers. Helping in-cosmetics
visitors to do this was John Jiménez, Senior Exploration Scientist at Belcorp, who talked delegates through the launch of Amazon’s new Indie Beauty Shop and what the rise of indie beauty might mean for Latin America.
Meanwhile, dozens of Technical Seminars – with topics ranging from ‘detox’ hair products to ‘human microbiome’ – ensured beauty professionals left the show with a wealth of knowledge and new formulation techniques under their belts. ITEHPEC also hosted two popular half-day paid-for technical workshops, focusing on the transformation of the cosmetic, toiletry and fragrance sectors.

Daniel Zanetti, Exhibition Director of in-cosmetics Latin America, commented:
“Once again in-cosmetics Latin America has delivered a show-stopping exhibition. Product formulators, marketers and ingredients professionals were given unsurpassed insight and handson product knowledge, while ingredients suppliers were able to present their latest innovations to an engaged, expert audience of potential customers.”

“Latin America is an increasingly important market for the personal beauty and skincare industry,
so it’s vital for brands and manufacturers to understand what makes it tick and how they can
meet the expectations of an informed consumer base that is hungry for innovation.”

in-cosmetics Latin America will return from 18-19 September 2019 at Brazil’s São Paulo’s Expo
Center Norte.  For more information visit latinamerica.in-cosmetics.com.

in-cosmetics Latin America 2018 has come to a close and the show’s fifth edition proved to be the biggest and best yet with a record 4,844 visitors across both days of the show. This year’s event was a huge success with a wealth of innovation launched at São Paulo’s Expo Center Norte, proving it to be the ultimate beauty ingredient event in the region.

This year we welcomed an array of impressive new companies at the show. Over 20 exhibitors from around the world made their debut at in-cosmetics Latin America 2018 including HelioScreen, a French-based laboratory specialising in the in vitro evaluation of sun protection in cosmetic products, such as SPF and water-resistance. HelioScreen showcased 16 innovations including its HD-THERMASTER, which is to be used during in vitro sunscreen testing. Hailing from China, Huzhou Ouli Biotechnology Co. Ltd., a leading manufacturer of cosmetic additives and personal care materials, also showcased it’s latest amino-based acid, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate.

A highlight of the exhibition was the Fragrance Trail, which offered visitors the ultimate sensory experience. The debut initiative introduced visitors to premier fragrance houses, producers and distributors of raw materials and extracts, such as Sensient, Givaudan and Tovani. Formulation advice was available from the industry experts on hand and R&D teams were able to source the ideal olfactory components for new skincare and beauty products through a focus on regional differences in scent preferences.

The 2018 show also launched the Regulations and Testing Zone, which saw a selection of exhibitors, including Pharmilab, Interlab and Allergisa, showcase state-of-the art testing facilities and talk visitors through current and upcoming regulations. Furthermore, in-cosmetics Latin America was excited to host a range of product launches at the Innovation Zone, such as Chemyunion’s ThermoShield, a heat-protecting active that entraps water inside hair fibres and forms a protective coat; and Gattefossé’s Definicire™, a 100% natural active texturising agent that increases hair hydrophobicity, guaranteeing frizz and volume control, curl definition under high humidity and enhanced hair smoothness.

The hotly anticipated Innovation Zone Awards saw Givaudan win gold for its anti-ageing PrimalHyal Ultrafiller, while IFF – Lucas Meyer Cosmetics picked up the silver award for its Greyverse™, and RAHN AG took bronze for its SEBOCLEAR™-MP.

The Spotlight On Awards presented gold to Chemyunion for its Make Up Eraser, the silver award to ANGUS Chemical Company for its DMAMP™ ULTRA PC and IFF – Lucas Meyer Cosmetics won bronze for Greyverse™ – its second win. Lastly, Lubrizol won the coveted Innovation and Technology in Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrances (ITEHPEC) Innovation Award for its FENSEBIOME peptid, which was developed to reinforce vulnerable urban skin to help it face modern life.

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who was a part of this year’s event and hope to see you all again next year for yet more exciting innovations, fascinating seminars and more mind-blowing demonstrations.

Ten of the cosmetic industry’s most exciting new ingredients have been selected as finalists in the in-cosmetics Asia Best Ingredient Awards. The shortlist includes an intelligent collagen booster, a natural film-forming biopolymer, a low-cost preservative blend and a next generation solubilizer.

The ingredients, featured in the exhibition’s Innovation Zone, have been nominated across two categories – Active and Functional. The awards reward the nominated companies for their ability to combine scientific excellence with formulation benefits for manufacturers and efficacy for consumers when compared to other products currently available on the market.

They were selected by a panel of industry experts including Belinda Carli, Director of the Institute of Personal Care Science; Barbara Olioso, Founder of The Green Chemist Consultancy and a professional “green” chemist with 18 years’ experience in the development of natural and organic cosmetics; Jack Ferguson, Managing Director of Skinnovation Ltd and an independent consultant to the cosmetics industry and Muriel Pujos, Director of Scientific Coordination Multi Brands at Coty.

The five finalists in the Active Ingredients category are:

AQUATIDE by AH&NS

AQUATIDE was developed from a resveratrol-like structure with amino acids of Skin NMF, using the concept of a ‘skincare vaccine’ for epigenetic stress management. The property is a very simple 3-in-1 treatment comprising maintenance, recycling and revitalization. Recommended applications are use as a morning toner, refreshing night mask or cellular booster essence to aid skin recovery from epigenetic bio-stress.

CobioDefender EMR by COBIOSA

CobioDefender EMR is a concentrated solution of highly purified glycogen from marine origin. The ingredient is proven to protect and prevent skin damage (ex-vivo/in-vitro) after EMR and blue light exposition, neutralising oxidative stress, reducing apoptotic cells and protecting against structural changes. It also addresses cellular epigenetic rejuvenation by regulating microRNA expression and senescence epigenetic modifications (in-vitro). It is the first active ingredient focused on reducing biological skin disorders resulting from the impact of digital premature ageing.

Defenscalp™ by Lucas Meyer Cosmetics

Extracted from fireweed and titrated in oenothein B polyphenols, Defenscalp™ is a smart multifunctional plant-derived ingredient designed to naturally and gently regulate the malassezia responsible for dandruff, while preserving the scalp’s microbiota ecosystem. As a scalp-friendly alternative to irritating anti-dandruff ingredients, Defenscalp™ provides outstanding clinical results on sebo-regulation and anti-dandruff action from the first use, without side effects. Defenscalp™ normalises sebum, reinforces corneocyte cohesion and modulates the scalp immuno-inflammatory defence system to maintain healthy, flake free, non-oily looking scalp and hair.

LIFTONIN®-XPERT by RAHN AG

LIFTONIN®-XPERT is an intelligent collagen booster from the leaf sap of the South African medical plant Bulbine frutescens. Thanks to the active substances knipholone and acetylated polymannose, LIFTONIN®-XPERT recalibrates the equilibrium between decomposition and reconstruction of dermal structures, thus providing the skin with an extra portion of high quality collagen. The natural collagen booster paves the way for exciting applications such as wrinkle fillers, stretch-mark products, nail care and tattoo aftercare.

 FILMEXEL® by SILAB

FILMEXEL® is a natural film-forming biopolymer providing a biomimetic network of cutaneous tissue at the surface of the skin. The film is resistant, flexible and non-occlusive and it perfectly shapes the skin, thereby protecting it from harmful exogenous agents. Its smoothing and anti-wrinkle effects are proven in various formulas, at different doses and on Caucasian and Asian volunteers – it also makes foundation last longer. FILMEXEL® is universal for facial and body care, and makeup.

Finalists in the Functional Ingredients category are:

ElfaMoist AC by Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry

ElfaMoist™ AC humectant is an effective new active that easily penetrates inside the skin (stratum corneum) and delivers and increases hydration, keeping skin moisturised for over 30 hours. Equally important, it performs exceptionally without disrupting the skin barrier, making it safe and gentle. ElfaMoist™ AC Humectant is patent pending.

 Cosphagard® Pretec by Cosphatec GmbH

Cosphagard® Pretec is a novel low cost preservative blend that can be used to replace controversially discussed preservatives like parabens. The synergistic effects of the ingredients give this blend a strong efficiency against bacteria, yeasts and moulds in low concentrations and can be used in all kinds of cosmetic formulations including baby care and products for sensitive skin.

TEGO® Solve 55 by Evonik Personal Care

TEGO® Solve 55, is a new generation solubilizer for natural cosmetics. PEG- and preservative-free, it is produced fully based on renewable raw materials, is readily biodegradable and provides much higher solubilizing efficacy – up to approximately 50% less solubilizer usage could be achieved in the formulation. It is cold-processable without causing high foaming during processing, hence it helps to reduce energy consumption in the personal care industry. Additionally, TEGO Solve 55 is a multi-functional ingredient providing mitigating and moisturising benefits.

C145 by Oleon

C145 is a unique combination of emulsifiers providing a basic solution in formulating a single step multiple emulsion. Products formulated using C145 will take the consumer on a journey from experiencing a light feeling to the after feel protective layer. This innovative ingredient has a wide-ranging application from skincare to high-end colour cosmetics.

EMOGREEN™ by SEPPIC ASIA

EMOGREEN™ is a revolutionary range of bio-based emollients connected to your emotions. These crystal clear, high purity, extra fluid biodegradable oils are from a traceable vegetable origin. Providing a unique refreshing and gliding sensation, EMOGREEN™ wraps skin in a soft and powdery veil. Thanks to its inert profile, EMOGREEN™ is suitable for versatile applications including skincare, haircare, make-up, suncare and colour cosmetics, among others.

Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in each category will be announced at a ceremony taking place on Wednesday 9th November from 2-3pm at the Innovation Zone at in-cosmetics Asia, Bangkok.

4 November 2015 – Lucas Meyer stole the show at in-cosmetics Asia this afternoon, with its Happiness in a Jar with LecigelTM functional and Exo-PTM active ingredients both claiming Gold in the event’s highly respected Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards.

The quantity of highly innovative ingredients at this year’s event meant that the 2015 awards were given in two categories – Best Active Ingredient and Best Functional Ingredient – with 12 products shortlisted by a panel of industry experts from Coty-Lancaster Group, Seers Consulting, KAL’IDEES S.A.S., Skinnovation Ltd and Coty Group.

More than 100 exhibitors and visitors gathered for the award ceremony hosted in the in-cosmetics Asia Innovation Zone, where they saw Lucas Meyer celebrate taking home Gold awards in both categories. Ashland’s ElixianceTM Biofunctional (Active) and Evonik Industries’ Varisoft EQ 100 (Functional) took the silver awards, while Gattefosse Gatuline® Spot-Light (Active) and Nikko Chemicals Nikkol Nikkofine LW (Functional) took third place in their respective areas.

In the active category, Exo-P™, which forms a biomimetic shield on the surface of the skin to fight against urban pollution and smog, was awarded top spot for being “a truly cosmetic ingredient providing a protection function important in today’s polluted cities” according to our judges. Whereas, Lucas Meyer’s Happiness in a Jar with Lecigel™ ingredient – developed by specialists in psychology and neuroscience – was a clear winner in the functional ingredient category. Judges said that “evaluating emulsifiers with superior textures to show that the consumer will feel pleasure in their use made this product an interesting and innovative proposition”.

Christine Desy, global commercial director of Lucas Meyer Cosmetics, commented: “We are overwhelmed and excited. These two awards are testament to our teamwork. Happiness in a Jar is magic coming from phospholipid. It’s a most unique texture and the next generation of emulsifiers. Exo-P is groundbreaking technology to fight pollution targeting PM2.5.”

Sarah Gibson, Event Director for in-cosmetics Asia, added: “It’s amazing to see the quality and quantity of entrants to this year’s awards. Each year we’re surprised by the impressive innovations that businesses present and this year was one of the best yet. We’d like to congratulate all the shortlisted companies, and especially those that took home the prizes today.”
