For a few years, the term “sourced locally” carried with it an air of exclusivity, while also giving a nod to those eco-conscious movements that, for a while, seemed to be more of a trend than a consumer demand.

Then COVID happened. Supply chains suffered. And we’ve begun to realise the richness of what’s in our backyard in a more mainstream way.

This does two things: It allows an industry to celebrate ingredients that have been right under people’s noses for a long time, and it creates a demand and interest into further developments of sustainably grown and processed ingredients.

By the way, when I say “our backyard” I am referring to the Pacific in general. Our quiet, somewhat protected corner of the world.

It’s been a long time since I wrote about what’s happening in the industry. A lot has changed! There’s been a lot of pivoting, and some business and industry casualties. But with that comes opportunity: new ways, new ideas and quite a lot of new learnings.

New Zealand has weathered the storm well, a small Island in the South Pacific that was once self-sufficient has had to learn how to do this again. Enter the newly celebrated movement of “locally sourced ingredients”.

Number 3 in Global Cosmetic and Personal Care Trends is The Rise of “Geographic Hotspots”. This is true for any geographic region of the world, and with New Zealand’s reputation for its clean green ingredients – along with those from our South Pacific neighbours – it’s something we can look to leverage from.

A move toward country-branded beauty has also gained steam, and the “made in” stamp on cosmetics products allows brands to capitalize on their own cultural associations.

Globalization and renewed interest in travel and culture helps drive this influential beauty trend and I can assure you the South Pacific is abundant in beautiful exotic ingredients.

We could have never predicted the strain we would have on our supply chain and cosmetic manufacturing. With lead times and freight costs blowing budgets we are forced to look closer to home for new ingredients for cosmetics and highlight our own cultural associations. I think I speak for all of the South Pacific when I say we are absolutely OK with that!

The benefits of sourcing ingredients within our own country is a direct reflection of what the solutions to challenges that COVID has presented us:

  • Reducing carbon footprint
  • Reduced lead times
  • Transparency
  • Country ownership/identity

I’d like to introduce some of the new – and locally sourced – natural raw ingredients that have recently caught my eye for personal care formulation.

OceanDerMX™ range (Stewart Island)

VALÉRE KELP (Akaroa), Certified Organic, NZ Harvested, Healthy, Traceable, Sustainable

NZ Giant kelp(Macrocystis pyrifera) is harvested fresh from living kelp forests. It grows abundantly in the cool sheltered waters around the South Island and is one of the fastest growing organisms on the planet. It is  harvest within 1m of the sea surface leaving the bulk of the plant to regrow and remain as shelter for living organisms. Harvesting Giant kelp is like the lawn mowing of the ocean – except the lawn grows back at up to 50cm a day!

After harvesting it is dried gently using air flow and dehumidification. During the drying process, temperatures never go above 30°C. This is to retain the natural flavour and nutrients. It is then simply crushed and sieved to two sizes – Fine & Powder, with an extremely high Iodine content.

NZ EXTRACTS (Marlborough) use the world’s first 100% aqua pure water extraction process to produce gold standard, waste-free products from fruit, berries & plants into multifunctional bio-active ingredients for the food & beverage, health & well-being & beauty & skincare industries.

VINANZA® BLANC XGS (Upcycling at its best)

Clinically proven by a leading Japanese University:

  • Anti-Ageing activity against accelerated ageing by UV Irradiation
  • Stimulate collagen production
  • Protect Skin Cells from oxidative stress
  • Provide low ß-galactosidase activity of ageing maker

MAILELANI COCONUT OIL (Samoa) The Direct Micro Expelling method (DME) is simple and environmentally friendly technique  founded by Kokonut Pacific, bringing “new life from the tree of life” to island coconut producers. With the DME process, virgin coconut oil is extracted only from fresh coconut flesh. The oil that is produced is excellent quality – handmade, natural, raw and unrefined, retaining all the original qualities. The oil is extracted from the coconut within one hour of splitting the seed. Small local teams grate the flesh, dry and load it into a press and hand- press it. The dry coconut residue is great for baking, so nothing gets wasted!

May the next wave of industry innovation be abundant with the bountiful variety of ingredients and innovation that are – more often than not – right there in front of us.

It seems like only yesterday we were planning and preparing for in-cosmetics Global 2020, it was set to be a spectacular show, celebrating 20 years since the start of in-cosmetics. Little did we know, we would be hit with something that would change the fate of all events for the next two years!

Fast forward to present times, we are celebrating the return of this brilliant show after an extended absence, in-cosmetics Global 2022 was a pure delight. I won’t be the only one who was feeling a little anxious and apprehensive before the show. It’s quite daunting after spending 2 years away from social interactions to then be integrated with thousands of new people; and then the thought of ‘what if people don’t show up’ definitely crossed my mind.

As scientists and formulators, I’m sure we can all relate to this point – product development is not as straightforward as we’d like it to be. There are so many things to consider like creating an effective product that is kind to the environment whilst still being commercially viable (this can seem impossible at times). Our industry as a whole is trying its hardest to take some steps toward saving the planet whilst also creating some brilliant, innovative ingredients which aim to support the sustainability movement.

For those who don’t know me, I am Rouah; a pharmaceutical scientist turned cosmetic scientist. I create, organise and lead the R&D Tours for in-cosmetics Global and Asia. I research the ingredients and decide what I think people will find interesting and useful for their upcoming projects. Our tour topics this year were Suncare & Skin Protection sponsored by Symrise, Naturals sponsored by Mibelle and Good for the Mind & Body Sponsored by Codif. We saw a really interesting range of ingredients from some brilliant exhibitors.

Although the R&D Tour topics differed there were some definite trends weaving through which tied them together. The first one I’ll mention is Green Chemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry defines green chemistry as the “design of chemical products and processes to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances.” Simply put, it efficiently uses renewable raw materials thus eliminating waste and avoiding the use of toxic and hazardous reagents and solvents in the manufacture and application of chemical products and ingredients. Since our industry is often targeted and blamed for waste and damage to the environment, this is a good step in the right direction and we hope to see more and more ingredients being produced through the utilisation of green chemistry.

This leads me on to the next trend; microalgae. There were many companies singing the praises of these biotechnologically derived marine ingredients developed for use in a variety of personal care products. The qualities that enable these microalgae to perform so well and fulfil a number of functions can be credited to the environment in which they are found. These organisms produce valuable metabolites as a result of being constantly exposed to stressful conditions such as high or low temperature, high salinity, osmotic pressure, photo-oxidation, and ultraviolet radiation.

As a result of these stressors, microalgae derivatives can be used to achieve certain results in skincare products; in particular products which target skin healing and repair, reducing inflammation and protection from UV damage. I would also say that it is a pro-ageing approach to skincare. Since many people are turning to more natural cosmetic products, microalgae derived cosmetic products are very desirable with the added benefit of being environmentally friendly.

Our final trend is the microbiome; the human microbiome refers to the plethora of microbes found in and on the body. These microbes form ecological communities called microbiota, the human microbiota includes hundreds of species of bacteria, fungi, mites and viruses. Every single person has a different skin microbiota and even on one person’s body, there are different environments depending on the area we are looking at. There is still so much to learn on this topic but If we try to understand how microbes interact with our skin, we can enhance our product development by being  able to cater more specifically to these ecological communities.

Green chemistry is on the rise and we will hopefully be seeing an increase in the number of ingredients being developed through this process, including marine derived ingredients and ingredients targeted to support the microbiome. So although we have discussed these concepts and referred to them as trends, it seems they are here to stay.

Check out our 60 second interview with Clariant and discover what ingredients they are going to be showcasing at in-cosmetics Global this year!

What will Clariant be showcasing at in-cosmetics Global this year?

We’re concentrating on our stepped-up support for Personal Care.

We’ll reveal new trends set to impact the industry linked with inspirational formulations through our novel BeautyForward® platform. We’ve a new guide of extensive formulations for different parts of the body based on our five innovative GlucoTain® sugar surfactant solutions. We’re launching a nature-inspired haircare formulation concept for weak damaged and thinning hair. Plus, our new Active Ingredients Unit will be represented. We’ve just opened the Unit’s HQ in Toulouse, France, and are excited to mark our entry into the world of active ingredients with an in-cosmetics team debut.

Why Toulouse?

The unit is headquartered in the BioParc of Toulouse, with excellent facilities and access to state-of-the-art labs. We chose Toulouse because of its proximity to potential development partners and key customers in the cosmetics industry. In addition, in Toulouse you can find a lot of experts from the field of cosmetics, a high level of expertise in biotechnology, and promising young talents from excellent universities. This location will contribute to making our company a top player in this field.

What are your priorities for Active Ingredients?

The team’s priorities will be to extend Clariant’s existing portfolio of naturally-sourced products from BioSpectrum and Beraca with the future development of novel nature-inspired active ingredients. It has at its disposal pharmaceutical industry-standard laboratories for skin biology studies and testing, and biochemical laboratories where the focus will be on synthesizing unique outperforming molecules for unmet consumers’ needs.

Do you already have active ingredients ready to launch at in-cosmetics Global?

We do. Reflecting our ambition to be a trend setter in this market, the team will be introducing the first solution for indoor pollution control, called Eosidin™.

Indoor pollution is the accumulation of heavy metals and other materials inside your home. It triggers a lot of irritation processes and leads to atopic-prone skin conditions. Eosidin™, an extract of unripe citrus unshiu from Korea, specifically targets the process of skin irritation triggered by indoor pollution and drastically decreases bad skin effects.

Staying with trend-setting, what new trends have you discovered in BeautyForward?

The second edition of BeautyForward® focuses on four new trends which we think will have a deep impact on the beauty business in the coming year. CUSTOM centers on people looking for individuality and self-expression; ORIGIN emphasizes the desire to stay connected with trusted traditions and ingredients; REVIVE is all about exploring new possibilities and reinvented products; and BALANCE speaks to those who need to break free from routine by enriching themselves in an indulging escape.

Show visitors should come by our Booth JJ10 to really emerge themselves in the trends, market insights, consumer profiles and our formulation inspirations.

Within these formulations, are there new ingredients you think will become more mainstream this year?

The BeautyForward® formulations we’re unveiling at in-cosmetics offer an innovative take on the trends and will feature surprises for show visitors, with an emphasis on nature-inspired and less familiar ingredients being used in novel ways. We expect these to inspire future beauty innovations and help our customers to be one step ahead in their product development.

Finally, you mentioned a new nature-inspired haircare formulation concept. Is haircare an important segment for Clariant?

It is. To strengthen our presence in the global haircare community, we’ve just placed our first-ever Global Competence Center Haircare at the heart of the fastest growing haircare market – Brazil. It opened on February 15, 2017.

Read our 60 second interview with ANGUS Chemical Company and find out what they will showcasing at in-cosmetics Global in London this year and what they think will be the next biggest trend in the cosmetics industry…

1) What will you be showcasing at in-cosmetics® Global this year?

ANGUS Chemical Company will be highlighting the multifunctional benefits of our ULTRA PC™ portfolio of amino alcohols in several new and exciting VersaSTYLE™ personal care formulation prototypes. These formulation prototypes were developed by the ANGUS Personal Care application team in Paris, and utilize our proprietary AMP-ULTRA™ PC, AMPD ULTRA PC™ and TRIS AMINO™ ULTRA PC neutralizers. ANGUS’ globally compliant neutralizers optimize performance for a broad array of personal care and cosmetics applications, including:

  • Hair care and styling – Excellent for hair gels, sprays and dyes, as superior alkalinizing agents, and are compatible with most fixative resins
  • Color Cosmetics – Ideal for mascara, lipsticks and powders, plus perform great in hypoallergenic formulations
  • Skin care – Preferred in wide array of skin care and eye care products, are ideal buffers and solubilizers, and have superior mildness for hypoallergenic formulations

2) What are you most looking forward to at in-cosmetics Global 2017?

The in-cosmetics Global event gives us the opportunity to educate the market on the performance benefits of incorporating our globally-compliant neutralizers into their product formulations. Our chemistries show better pH buffering properties and alcohol compatibility when compared to inorganic bases, and also demonstrate excellent color stability with low odor levels. In addition, ANGUS ULTRA PC™-grade products offer universal cosmetic acceptability and are compliant with the most recent Cosmetics Directives on secondary amine and nitrosamine content of raw materials used in the manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products.

3) What are the greatest challenges currently facing the cosmetic industry?

The constant challenge for the cosmetics industry is meeting ever-changing consumer trends. Another notable challenge we see is that as demand for cosmetics keeps growing, especially in the Asia and Latin American markets, brand owners are faced with introducing new products to meet geographically distinct beauty identities and trends for both men and women. For example, hair products specific for Brazil, or color cosmetics and skin treatments specific for China. That’s why ANGUS has made significant investments in building out our capabilities and expertise in five regional Customer Application Centers (CAC) around the world. These centers bring technology and formulation expertise to a local level to provide the best solution for customers.

4) What do you believe will be the next big trend to gain traction?

Brand owners are increasingly looking for ingredients suppliers like ANGUS to better support their commitment to developing new formulations that meet the market trends and demands in regional markets. ANGUS recently reaffirmed our commitment to European customers by bringing together world-class technical services and regulatory expertise in a new Customer Application Center in Paris. Local and regional customers will be able to work side-by-side with ANGUS to expedite innovation that will bring new and exciting products to market. Whether it’s helping formulate away from traditional caustic or TEA systems with our gentle TRIS AMINO™ neutralizers, or providing full transparency in our fully integrated supply chain all the way back to raw materials, we are well-positioned to support our customers’ goals.
